Fascinating to read — having started my career in consulting, besides the “up-or-out” policy, none of this was evident to me as a junior employee.
Would these dynamics apply to professional services within a software/product company? E.g., Veeva or Salesforce both have pretty big professional services arms. I assume not because a.) the non-services portion of the company can be a kind of source or sink for excess talent; b.) the professional services work probably falls within some mix of the “procedure” + “grey hair” work, because it’s such a specific kind of services work.

Thank you for this well laid out summary. I completed the book a couple of weeks back & will revisit my highlights now.
