There is perhaps no story quite as demonstrative of Amazon’s frugality as the door desk story. When Amazon first started, founder Jeff Bezos got his employees to construct desks, made out … of doors.

A no-hardware version of the door desk:

One door
Two 2 drawer file cabinets
Some rug pad or shelf liner grip material, like

How to:

  1. Cut the grip material to fit the tops of the filing cabinets
  2. Put material on filing cabinet tops
  3. Position filing cabinets so they will leave ~15 centimeters of door overhang on either side
  4. Place door on top

As long as the floor underneath the filing cabinets is level, the desk won’t wobble, adding stuff to the top helps keep the door from moving when bumped, and disassembly/moving is simple

I haven’t needed a desk this large for some time, but my family used a couple for about 15 years starting in the late 80s - they hold up much better than the particle board + veneer desks in the same price range ($US)
